Music Team San Francisco

Music Team San Francisco provides intensive music instruction to low income children in an after school program.  We operate 4 days a week, starting in kindergarten and continuing with the same children at least through 5th grade.  Musicianship and instrumental instruction occurs for 90 minutes each day.  The concept is based on the highly successful “El Sistema” program in Venezuela, which has proven a cost effective method of improving schoolwork, reducing crime and poverty.

Why are these programs so effective?

• Sustained, focused learning and practice in one area gives children the experience that persistence leads to positive results. They can apply this to any future pursuit. In the age of video games, texting and web surfing, developing attention span and patience in children is critical.

• Playing an instrument is immediately appealing to kids. They get instant feedback, from their sound and the teacher’s comments, so when progress occurs it is obvious and rewarding.

• Ensemble playing is interactive and fun. Teamwork and good group behavior are learned as an integral part of the class.

• Leadership development occurs through having experienced children mentor younger ones.

• The motivation and reward of frequent public performance helps sustain kids’ excitement in the program.
