VABANG!
Vabang! is a modern dance company which was co-founded by Jessie Feller and Julia Sabangan in September 2007. After years of pre-professional training, the two performed together for three years on stages in Manhattan and in the Hudson Valley with Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre. Vabang! is an original bi-coastal dance collaboration. Vabang! brings bold movement and musical ideas together from five continents, and situates them onto stages on both coasts. Feller is based in San Francisco while Sabangan is based in New York City.
Vabang! exists to transcend boundaries and conventional categories. Vabang! shapes new concepts of "space" (social, conceptual, geographical), and bridges various spaces, be they natural or socially constructed. Through intensely athletic movement, Vabang! provokes audiences to question their path dependent thinking on current social and geo-political issues such as feminism, transnationalism, and climate change.
Vabang! performances and events create "third spaces," fostering creative interaction and civic engagement with the arts and politics. Vabang! provides a starting point to break down constructed spaces, creating new spatial interactions on stage and in the minds of the audience.
